# Interval vs Dato for meetings on Mac

By [Cory Parry](https://meetinterval.com/about) , maker of Interval · Updated 17 October 2026

Dato is an $18 one-time menu-bar calendar with world clocks and fullscreen meeting notifications. Interval is a £15.99 (US$19.99) one-time Mac meeting timer focused on the call itself: countdowns to the start and end, five extra minutes on a personal timer, overlap warnings and notes. Some people use both.

Dato's price was checked 17 October 2026 on [Dato's own website](https://sindresorhus.com/dato) . Written by Interval's maker.

## Short answer

Choose Dato if you want a menu-bar calendar and world clocks with meeting notifications and joining alongside them. Choose Interval if your calendar already does what you need and you want to keep track of the call's start, finish and overlaps at the screen edge. These are different roles: one app can be useful without making the other redundant.

Interval has no calendar view or world clocks. It does not replace the part of Dato you open to browse dates or compare times around the world. If those are the features you use every day, staying with Dato is a sensible choice.

## What Dato is

[Dato](https://sindresorhus.com/dato) is a menu-bar calendar with world clocks, fullscreen meeting notifications and meeting joining. Its maker lists Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams and more than 50 other services, plus an option to show an upcoming event in the menu bar. That wider service range matters if invitations in your calendar use services outside Interval's five named options.

The website offers a free trial and an $18 one-time purchase, checked 17 October 2026. The [App Store listing](https://apps.apple.com/us/app/dato/id1470584107?mt=12) also showed $18.00 and requires macOS 26.0. Dato's website provides older versions for older macOS releases. If your Mac cannot run macOS 26, that is a practical reason to investigate Dato's appropriate older version instead of buying Interval.

## What Interval is

Interval is a meeting companion at your Mac's screen edge. Its start countdown helps you see the next call approaching; its end countdown keeps the scheduled finish in view during the discussion. It folds into a compact timer when you need room for your work, and opens to show meeting information and manual notes.

Current native SwiftUI view, rendered with fictional example data on 5 October 2026. No private calendar or notes.

If the discussion needs longer, **+5 min** adds five minutes to your personal timer. Agree the extension with the group separately: the control leaves the calendar invitation unchanged and does not extend anybody else's call. That boundary matters when another meeting starts immediately afterwards.

An orange “Overlaps with…” warning appears beside a conflicting meeting. It is a visible schedule warning, not automatic rescheduling or a promise of a separate system notification. The timer and warning help you decide what to do; the decision to shorten, leave or rearrange belongs to you.

Interval reads selected Apple Calendar events on your Mac and never edits them. Google and Outlook calendars must appear in Apple Calendar first; there is no direct Google or Outlook sign-in. It works on-device without an Interval account. Supported meeting links are Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, Webex and FaceTime. It does not create, schedule or reschedule meetings, track working hours, provide a shared team or room timer, or run on Windows.

## Use both?

You can keep Dato for its calendar, clocks and meeting notifications, and use Interval for the time you spend inside the call. The question is whether both views help you: keep the tools that earn their place in your day. Interval's calendar source is Apple Calendar, so make the relevant calendars available there even if another app is your usual calendar interface.

For example, use your preferred calendar to plan the day, check the next call, then keep Interval's compact countdown beside the work you are discussing. At the end, use the remaining time to record the decision and agree the next action. The [meeting finish-time guide](https://meetinterval.com/guides/stop-meetings-running-over) gives a worked example of that agreement.

## FAQ

### Does Dato show a countdown to the end of a meeting?

Dato’s [official feature list](https://sindresorhus.com/dato) , reviewed 17 October 2026, documents an upcoming event in the menu bar. Its published Mac functionality has no current-meeting end countdown; the closest features are the upcoming-event display and full-screen event-start alerts. Interval shows a personal countdown to the scheduled end.

### Can I use Dato and Interval together?

Yes, their roles can complement each other: Dato for the calendar and clocks, Interval for the call. Interval still reads the calendars you select through Apple Calendar.

### Which is better for Microsoft Teams calls?

Both list Teams support. Choose around the rest of the workflow: Dato's calendar and notifications, or Interval's personal meeting time, overlaps and notes. Interval needs a supported Teams link in an Apple Calendar event.

### Do both need macOS 26?

Interval does. Dato's current App Store version does too, but its website offers older versions for older macOS releases.

### Do either have a free trial?

Dato offers a website trial. Interval's website purchase is paid before download with no trial; you can request a refund within 14 days, including after download or activation.
